What Can I Expect from an Episcopal Worship?

Our worship is liturgical, meaning it follows the same service and prayers week to week from texts that don't change much during a given season of the year. This sameness gives the worship a rhythm that becomes comforting and familiar to worshipers.

All worship in the Episcopal Church is based in the Book of Common Prayer.

The liturgy might seem confusing at first. However, a printed bulletin is available at every service providing guidance.

Who May Receive Communion?

All baptized Christians—no matter age or denomination—are welcome to receive communion (also known as the Eucharist) by joining the congregation at the altar to eat the bread and drink the wine. For those who do not feel comfortable drinking from the communal cup, you may receive by intinction.  Episcopalians invite all baptized people to receive, not because we take the Eucharist lightly, but because we take our baptism so seriously.

Visitors who are not baptized Christians are welcome to come forward during the Communion to receive a blessing.

How Long is the Service?

Most Sunday services last about an hour.  However, special services such as Christmas and Easter tend to be longer.  The 4:30 pm service tends to run about 30 minutes depending on the size of the group and how the spirit moves us that particular afternoon.

What Should I Wear?

You will find a wide variety of types of clothing at St. John's from jeans to business attire. However, most of the congregation wear business casual attire (example: khaki pants and a polo shirt). During special services, such as Christmas, many members prefer to dress up. Remember it does not matter what you wear, only that you are able to join us to celebrate God's love!
